The Toyota Land Cruiser is a high-mileage champ, easily capable of racking up 200,000 miles or more. Look for one in your favorite online classifieds, and it’s not unusual to see them listed with that kind of mileage, still in good condition, and with plenty of life left. According to iSeeCars, the Toyota Land Cruiser has a long potential lifespan. But there is a Toyota SUV that has dethroned it.
In the recent iSeeCars survey, the Toyota Sequoia outperformed the Land Cruiser. Not surprisingly, both vehicles have a lot in common. Both are large, three-row SUVs and share many of the same mechanical components. However, the Sequoia managed to surpass its Land Cruiser sister as the new high-mileage champion.
How iSeeCars determines the most durable SUV
iSeeCars collected data on more than two million cars produced during at least 10 of the last 20 model years. It ranked the top 20 models based on the highest average mileage achieved. Each of the top 20 models had at least 2.5% of their vehicles with more than 200,000 miles, and the top 1% of these vehicles had between 230,000 and 297,000 miles.
The Toyota Sequoia is the new enduring champion
The top 1% of Toyota Land Cruisers logged an average of 280,236 miles. That is an impressive number that puts it at number 2 on the list. However, the Toyota Sequoia went further with the top 1% achieving an average of 296,509 miles on the odometer.
As it turns out, three-row SUVs make up about half of the iSeeCars roster. This confirms the heavy use received by these vehicles, both commercial and family, which accumulate more miles than any other category of vehicle. It also highlights the popularity of these vehicles. In fact, the three-row SUV has become one of the most popular segments in the last 20 years.
This popularity explains why the Sequoia surpassed the Land Cruiser in terms of potential lifespan. While both are very similar vehicles and share many parts, the Sequoia has a reputation for being more family-friendly.
As summed up by iSeeCars in its findings, “The Land Cruiser has a proven track record for durability, but its aging platform has been eclipsed by the modern, refined Sequoia, as reflected in the heavier use and higher mileage achieved by the older SUV.” new from Toyota”. Brauer said.
How many miles can a Toyota SUV last?
The useful life of a vehicle is determined by two things. First, the quality of the vehicle plays a large role in its longevity. A well-built vehicle is more reliable, has fewer, less expensive repairs, and has a rugged appearance and is more likely to outlast other vehicles.
Equally important is how well the owners take care of the vehicle. Regular upkeep and upkeep are crucial to a vehicle’s longevity. A vehicle that is well maintained, where the recommended service schedule is followed and is cleaned regularly will last longer. This is true with any vehicle. In fact, a vehicle with lower quality and reliability scores will last longer than one with higher scores if it is better maintained.
By Kelley’s Blue Book, the average vehicle on the road today is 12.2 years old, and that number continues to rise. Cars and trucks have gotten more reliable and better built, but Toyota still has a reputation for building some of the most durable vehicles around. Assuming a Toyota SUV gets over 15,000 miles a year and has an average age of 12.2 years, it will have almost 200,000 miles.
According to iSeeCars, at 200,000 miles, both the Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota Sequoia have plenty of life and are more than capable of 300,000 miles with care and maintenance.
