The SUV segment offers some of the most reliable cars you can buy, but some are still more reliable than others. No one wants to spend a lot of cash on a nice vehicle only to pay through the nose for maintenance every year. Consider these SUVs if you’re shopping—new data estimates they’ll all last at least 250,000 miles.
Chevrolet Tahoe – potential lifespan: 250,338 miles
According to iSeeCars, the Chevrolet Tahoe could last up to 250,338 miles with proper maintenance. This SUV seats up to nine passengers, powered by a 355-hp V8. It also has two other engines to offer, a 420-hp V8 and a 277-hp turbodiesel.
The latter allows the Tahoe to get the best gas mileage, up to 21/28 mpg city/highway with RWD. The Chevy Tahoe Z71 gives you more off-road features, including off-road tires and a two-speed transfer case. Tahoe also has one of the largest cargo capacities in the segment, with nearly 123 cubic feet of available space.
GMC Yukon XL – potential lifespan: 252,360 miles
This big SUV has the potential to last 252,360 miles and has an even bigger cargo hold than the Tahoe. It’s the long-wheelbase version of the regular Yukon, with nearly 145 cubic feet of storage. The third row alone has more than 41 cubic feet of space behind it.
The Yukon XL also has plenty of storage compartments inside, including a large center console that can slide forward and backward on certain models. It has the same engine options as the Chevy Tahoe, as well as an off-road version. Its extended dimensions offer roomy seats, but this also makes it quite difficult to park in crowded areas.
Chevrolet Suburban – potential lifespan: 265,732 miles
iSeeCars reports that the Chevy Suburban has a potential useful life of 265,732 miles. Its powertrain options mirror the previous two SUVs, and properly equipped models can tow up to 8,300 lbs.
The Chevy Suburban seats up to nine passengers, and each row is reasonably comfortable for most adults. Its ride is smoother when you get the optional air suspension, and the 2023 model also gets hands-free driving Super Cruise.
Toyota Land Cruiser – potential lifespan: 280,236 miles
Your Toyota Land Cruiser has a potential useful life of up to 280,236 miles. It was discontinued after the 2021 model year, but is still recognized today as a great all-rounder. It also has plenty of standard security features, though its convenience tech offerings haven’t aged well.
While the 381-hp engine offers good performance, it also gets terrible fuel economy. With standard 4WD, you’ll only get 13/17 mpg city/highway.
Toyota Sequoia – potential lifespan: 296,509 miles
The Toyota Sequoia is reportedly the most reliable SUV you can buy on this list, with a potential lifespan of 296,509 miles. The 2023 models received a unique hybrid powertrain producing a combined 437 hp.
It also has a nicer interior compared to some of its rivals, though its cargo capacity and third-row seat dimensions are below average. Some of its standard features, like a moonroof and navigation, are rarities for the segment.
What to do with these findings
Take the findings of this study with a grain of salt. iSeeCars determined its vehicle rankings by examining the highest mileage in the top 1% of each respective model and then calculating the average. Many SUVs have the potential to last more than 250,000 miles if you’re willing to put in the work.
iSeeCars recommends never missing a service appointment and exercising safe driving practices. Pumping the brakes aggressively or pushing the engine too hard can shorten the life of even the most reliable cars. Remember that you will need to replace most major components, such as suspension parts or timing belts, every 100.00 miles (give or take).
