In particular, it is mandatory to link your PAN and Aadhaar, as linking these identification documents would allow you to complete your tax returns. PAN can be linked with a valid Aadhaar at www.incometax.gov.in after paying a fee of Rs. 1000. On March 30, the department introduced a subsection (2) under section 139AA mandating that a fine of Rs. 500 will be charged for linking the documents until June 30, 2022 and will be increased to Rs. 1000 after that. After March 31, 2023, the PAN of taxpayers who do not link their Aadhaar, as required, will become inoperative and all the consequences provided in the Law for not providing, indicating or quoting the PAN will apply to said taxpayers. The consequences include not being able to file the return using the inoperative PAN; pending returns cannot be issued to inoperative PANs, among others.


Here is how to link PAN with Aadhaar online: Check the steps here

Step 1:

Go to the official income tax e-filing portal or click the link: https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.

Step 2:

In the ‘Quick Links’ section, click on ‘Aadhaar Link Option’ and then provide your PAN and Aadhaar number. Then touch ‘Validate’.

Step 3:

If Aadhaar and PAN are already linked, the message ‘PAN is already linked to Aadhaar or some other Aadhaar’ will appear on your screen.

Step 4:

If your PAN is not linked to your Aadhaar and you have paid a challan on the NSDL Portal, the payment information will be validated by electronic submission. You will get a popup notification that “Your payment details are verified” after confirming PAN and Aadhaar.

Step 6:

When you submit your Aadhaar-PAN link request, you will be able to check the status.

Step 7:

Additionally, PAN holders will need to allow 4-5 business days before submitting the linking request.
