When looking for a new midsize truck, it’s easy to want to go for the top version. And in the case of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, that model is the TRD Pro. The TRD Pro package has long been the ultimate off-road version of the Tacoma, but it’s also the most expensive. That might lead you to consider a more affordable option, like the Tacoma SR5. So how do these two models compare?
What does SR5 mean in a Toyota Tacoma?
In the past, SR5 stood for “Sport Rally Five” on a Toyota vehicle. This meant some off-road prowess and other sporty features. The SR5 model now sits on top of the base Tacoma SR model.
With the 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5, you get features like fog lights, leather-trimmed interior, and available dual-zone automatic climate control. The SR5 Tacoma is also available in a variety of configurations. And that makes it quite versatile depending on the specific needs of your midsize truck.
Also notable about the Tacoma SR5 is that it is available with two different engines. These engines include a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine with 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. For an additional fee, you can opt for a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The TRD Pro Is the Ultimate 2023 Toyota Tacoma
With the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, buyers get an off-road-ready midsize pickup straight from the factory. This truck features a locking rear differential, FOX Internal Bypass shocks, and an upgraded exhaust system.
Also, it is only available with the V6 engine and four-wheel drive. Better yet, for those who want to row their own gears, you can still get it with a six-speed manual transmission.
Unfortunately, according to motor trend, the TRD Pro is only available with a five-foot bed, and it doesn’t come cheap. It has a starting MSRP of $46,685, and that’s before options. Because of that cost, this certainly isn’t a truck for everyone.
How do the two compare?
In terms of comparison, these midsize trucks are built for two different reasons. The Tacoma TRD Pro is for someone who plans to go off-roading quite often and wants a truck that looks good.
The 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5 is for the driver who wants more features than the base Tacoma offers, but may not need the same level of capability. At the same time, this Toyota truck has a thriving aftermarket community.

If you have the budget, it’s entirely possible to upgrade a Tacoma SR5 for off-road use. Especially since it can be achieved with 4WD. But, doing so will require a bit of footwork. If you want something less expensive than the TRD Pro, but don’t want to give up the off-road advantages, the TRD Off-Road is available.
At the end of the day, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Toyota Tacoma SR5 are solid trucks. The question comes down to what you intend to use your truck for.
