The new Ford Mustang SUV is an electric SUV, with the name of Mustang. Sure, several people balked at the idea of Ford putting the famous Mustang sports car name on an SUV, let alone an electric one. But it has racked up several awards and tops many electric vehicle lists, and not just SUVs. What makes the Mustang Mach-E special?
What is the best electric SUV?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E might just be the best electric SUV, thanks to the number of awards it’s won. For example, the Mach-E won the American Automobile Association’s Best All Around award for 2022, the 2022 Car and Driver Electric Vehicle of the Year, the AutoGuide Utility of the Year award and the AutoWeek Car Buyer award, according to Torque News. It is also recommended by Consumer Reports.
However, its main rival, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, is this year’s Motorbiscuit EV/Hybrid of the Year. When you get into the new 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, it feels futuristic. It also has a large cargo area, up to 320 horsepower, and it even earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. The Mach-E will also soon face competition from the new all-electric Chevy Blazer SUV.
How fast is the Mach-E electric Mustang?
The Mach-E in the GT Performance Edition version can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, according to Ford. The Tesla Model Y, however, is slightly quicker with a burst of 3.5 seconds to 60, according to Tesla. Other Teslas, like the Plaid edition, are much quicker, with reservation times of less than 2.0 seconds. But sometimes being in the fastest electric SUV doesn’t mean you’re in the best electric SUV.
Ford Mustang Mach-E starts at $43,895 for the base Select with a standard-range battery and all-wheel drive. The AAA award-winning Premium is a step up. The Premium is not only more expensive, at $48,775, but you can make it more expensive with the extended-range battery with 346 horsepower and 303 miles of range. It can be ordered with a B&O sound system, heated seats and steering wheel, and an upgraded interior.
Ford is ramping up production of the Mach-E Electric Mustang SUV

Ford is now seeing demand for the Mach-E grow so fast that it is ramping up production to reach 270,000 units a year. In December, it announced that it has sold 150,000 Mustang Mach-E SUVs so far and that the model is key to reaching a production rate of 600,000 EVs. For Ford, that shows its confidence in the Mustang Mach-E SUV. Now it sells it in 38 countries. The model set sales records earlier this year.
Can you drive the Mach-E in the cold?
Cold limits battery power in most electric vehicles. Preconditioning your Ford EV’s battery can help. With most electric vehicles, you can set a time you want to drive and during the days of the week, so when you get in the car it’s already warm while it’s charging. That means you won’t have to use battery power to warm up the car on a cold morning. With Mach-E and most electric vehicles, you can also set how much you want your vehicle to charge and the interior temperature.
By pre-conditioning your electric car setup, whether it’s for hot or cold days, you can save battery power. But since it takes more energy to heat a car, power heated seats, or melt snow, in winter it can make a bigger difference.
