US News and World Report named the Ram Truck Brand the Best Truck Brand for 2023. This marks the fourth consecutive time that Ram has ranked No. 1 in the annual survey. Sure, the award means you get to place the Best Cars gold chevron in ads. But why did Ram win again?
How did US News choose a winner?
To win the Best Vehicle Brand award, US News earns the highest overall score of all products from a brand in each class. The highest average scores determine the winners. US News bases its ratings on safety, reliability, and automotive press reviews. In total, it evaluates 38 brands.
This is the fourth time that Ram has won the award. Overall, the Ram 1500 truck finished with a score of 9.1, while the 2023 Ford F-150 trailed just behind with a score of 9.0. The GMC Sierra 1500 scored an 8.5, while the 2023 Chevy Silverado scored an 8.2. Ram trucks also hold their value well during the first few years of ownership.
Is it worth buying Ram trucks?
US News likes the interior, and it’s easy to see why. Ram, and back when the trucks were sold as Dodge Ram trucks, the interiors were a disappointment with cheap plastics and questionable build quality. However, Ram has been ahead of the curve in making its interiors some of the best in the last two generations of the 1500. It’s also capable and powerful with its beefy 5.7-liter Hemi engine making around 400 horsepower.
Interestingly, Ram buyers may be more enamored with their trucks than with those of other brands. For 2022, the Ram 1500 earned first place in JD Power’s APEAL (Automotive Performance Execution and Layout Study) in its class. APEAL ratings measure the emotional attachment customers have to a vehicle. Overall, the brand ranked second in the APEAL survey, a spot it also ranked in 2020 and 2021.
Are Ram trucks of good quality?
Reliability is a factor US News uses to rank makes and vehicles, and at JD Power, the 1500 scores average for reliability and scores higher than most for predicted reliability. But the 1500 also gets high marks for safety and performance. It also outperforms the Toyota Tundra in reliability.
The Ram gets high marks from US News on another measure of quality; driving quality. Rams come standard with independent rear suspension, which is a feature Ford and Chevy don’t offer. Dramatically improves the ride of a 1500.
What’s next for Ram trucks?
For 2023, the 1500 trucks don’t get much of a change. However, the heavy-duty 3500 and 2500 versions received a notable facelift with a few new options.
The big news on the horizon for Ram trucks is their all-electric pickup. Ram has made some promises that the new Revolution, as it’s called, should have monstrous capabilities. We won’t know until the next Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, in Las Vegas on January 5. The new Ram 1500 BEV should debut in 2024 and lead the company’s electrification efforts.
