2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV: What we know so far
Did you know that the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and Thor have something in common? Both have electrical power. As Thor uses his powers to save the world, the Mazda CX-90 PHEV will help you save at the pump.
But first, what exactly is a PHEV? It is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. This means that it runs on gas and electricity. Typically, PHEV models have an electric stove that does not use gas. Some options use a combination of power and gasoline to improve fuel economy.
Also, if they run out of charge, don’t worry. These vehicles can also run on gasoline. They can usually be charged overnight.
The CX-90 PHEV is currently a mystery. Shared Mazda which will be its first PHEV vehicle launched in the United States. It will maintain the responsiveness, performance and driving dynamics Mazda is known for.
The new e-Skyactiv propulsion system is specifically tuned for the North American market. It will provide drivers with the best of both worlds in terms of efficiency and performance.
How much power will the CX-90 have?
We may not know how much power the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV will have until its debut in January. We don’t want to stress you out, but that will be coming soon. It will be here right after the holidays, which we need to start preparing for!
Anyway, we can still speculate about it based on clues. The 2024 CX-90 will ride on a new longitudinal platform reserved for large vehicles, such as three-row options.
It comes with a new straight-six engine that will sit longitudinally. Could share options with the Mazda CX-60. In other countries, the Mazda CX-60 PHEV makes 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid configuration is 48 volt assisted.
Because the CX-90 will be bigger and heavier, it could have less power. However, it could be tuned differently to provide more punch here in the United States.
The CX-60 PHEV has an estimated electric range of up to 39 miles, which is great. That’s more than the average person handles on a daily basis. The CX-90 could have a reduced range if it had more sporty features.
Does the CX-90 replace the CX-9?

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is expected to replace the aging Mazda CX-9 in the United States. While it’s respected as the largest and incredibly luxurious three-row vehicle, it doesn’t have enough space.
The roofline is low and the third-row seats are cramped. It also lacks cargo space. The CX-90 comes with a higher profile and boxier shape to solve these problems.
Likewise, the CX-9 has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The CX-90 will likely have multiple engine options and a bit more power.
The CX-9 gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway, which could be better. Perhaps the CX-90 Hybrid and PHEV will run better on gasoline. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
