The truck wars aren’t just about towing, hauling, or who has the best interior packages. Sometimes it’s just about the size and what you can fit in it. Pickup trucks are, after all, work vehicles for people who need to haul a lot of stuff. Two of the most popular trucks are the Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado, so which is the bigger truck?
Is a Ram bigger than a Chevy?
The Ram offers a long bed option, which extends the standard 67-inch bed to a 76-inch bed. The beds in the Ram tricks measure 66.4 inches wide. However, Chevy offers three bed lengths on the Silverado, a 66-inch standard bed, a 97-inch long bed, and a 68-inch short bed. Chevy sells the Silverado as a two-door, regular-cab model, and Ram only makes four-door pickups, which means Chevy can offer more bed options. Due to bed length options, the Chevy may be longer, but both are about the same width.
Of course, a pickup truck isn’t just about the length of the bed. In crew cab and four-door versions, the Chevy has 43 inches of headroom in the front and 40 inches in the rear. It also has 44.5 inches of legroom in the front and 43.4 inches in the rear. The Ram, however, has a longer interior with 40.9 inches of headroom in the front and 39.8 in the rear. However, its legroom is 45.2 inches in the rear and 40.9 inches in the front.
Size isn’t everything in these full-size trucks

Sometimes size doesn’t matter. JD Power, for example, named the Ram 1500 No. 1 in Driver Appeal since its 2019 update, and the Ram’s interior is definitely a nice place to spend some time. Rams have a unique, for a large truck, independent rear suspension that gives these trucks a much smoother ride than solid-axle trucks from Ford, Chevy, GMC, or Nissan. Over the past two generations, Rams have also been able to boast some of the nicest interiors on the market.
Chevy recently updated the interiors of its trucks. The new 2022 and 2023 versions have a sleek, extra-long touchscreen in the dash, along with driver-focused controls. The new interiors are a big improvement over the cheap plastics and old-looking small screen that the 2021 and earlier versions have. The new interior packages also raise the bar of the interior to near GMC levels of luxury.
Does the Chevy tow or haul more than a Ram?
In most trims, the Chevy Silverado and Ram 1500 are very competitive. The Ram can two up to 8,320 pounds and carry 2,335 pounds. A Chevy Silverado can tow a maximum of 13,300 pounds, depending on configuration. It has a payload capacity of up to 2,260 pounds. The Chevy Silverado is the second best-selling truck, while the Rams rank third.
Of course, these capabilities depend on the engine, suspension, and towing kit you purchase. The Ram comes with several engine options: You can order a V6 or the 5.7-liter Hemi with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. However, if you want diesel, you’ll have to act fast, as Ram has decided to stop production of its smaller diesel engines in January 2023. Silverado offers a new 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes up to 310 horsepower. strength, however, you can still order the 5.3-liter V8, a 3.0-liter Duramax diesel, or the mighty 420-horsepower 6.2-liter.
